Placement Interview

Omji Awasthi (Final B.Tech. BE)

Question-Answers :

Q1)  Sir what company did you get placed in?

-> I have received an opportunity to work in Aakash, as an Assistant Lecturer of Mathematics.

Q2) Sir prior to placements, did you have any internship?

-> Yes, I did my internship in my 3rd year at ONGC which is a Chemical Engineering-based firm. My branch is Biochemical Engineering but I was more into exploring the Chemical Engineering sector. Hence, I chose to do my internship here. It is a PSU. Getting placed here would've assured me, a bright and stable career, which also motivated me to prepare for the GATE exam. Unfortunately, the PSUs only accept a degree of Chemical Technology and not the other sub fields like Biochemical Engineering. So, eventually, I had to drop the idea. The internship lasted for a month or so.

Q3) Sir what value did this internship add in your placement?

-> It was a first-timer, where I got first hand experience and exposure in this field. Also, I got to learn a lot more about everything related in general, which indeed was very valuable.

Q4) Sir did you add or highlight any projects in your CV?

->Yes, I did. A project in my final year on fruit based ethanol production which was a core Biochemical subject. It was one of the central points of attraction in my CV.

Q5) Sir what is the importance of CGPA in placements and how much is sufficient for grabbing a placement preferably in a company that pays on the higher side?

-> You should maintain a minimum of 7.5 CGPA for getting shortlisted by almost all the visiting companies. I too, maintained my CGPA above 7.5. Below that things start to get a bit tougher, but obviously not impossible. So assuring a minimum CGPA, is sufficient.

Q6) Sir what were the resources that boosted your preparation?

-> I did no special preparation, whatsoever. I was keenly interested in this field from the very beginning. Also, I had been an online tutor from the first year on various platforms such as YouTube. Seeing it as an opportunity, I applied at Aakash which visited our campus for recruitments.

Q7) Sir what was the process of your hiring? Please shed some light on the different interview rounds.

-> It was rigorous. There were four rounds of hiring- first was the subject test, second was the very crucial demo round and last was the HR round.
In the Demo round, the recruiters determine that do you have the required teaching skills, or not. How well are your presentation skills, are you confident enough to face the camera, stuff like that.
Secondly, coming to the subject interview, it mainly involves a subject expert, who asks you questions related to the subject you want to teach. Apart from this, there are the basic and personal questions about your personality, your preferred city of work, family related questions etc.

Q8) Sir what subject did you opt for at Aakash?

-> I picked Mathematics as my subject. It has been one of favourites back from my school days and it still continues to be.

Q9) Sir what was the duration of each round of the interview? Were they held back-to-back?

-> Each round was of about 20 minutes and there were gaps of 1-2 days between each round. The entire process lasted for about 8 days and I got my final result on the 28th of February. Generally, the process is not very fatiguing, despite the seriousness of the issue.

Q10) Sir what were the key factors that you mentioned in your CV, that led to your hiring?

-> I had learnt coding- Java, Java advance, Java JDBC and had also done projects on the same. Coding is nowadays, a skill which should be learnt by every individual, regardless of the domain. At least the basics must be touched upon. So, the coding related stuff took much of the space in my CV.

Q11) Sir what is the weightage of the CV in an interview?

-> Your CV holds a LOT of weightage in almost any interview. It is your identification to the interviewer. You ought to mention everything about yourself in the CV. Based upon which, the questions are framed. It has to be nearly perfect if you want to pass the interview with flying colours. I'd take a moment here, to warn you: DO NOT mention any false qualifications in the CV! As the interviewer’s questions are mainly based upon the details which you provide, any misleading information can cause potential harm.

Q12) Sir any advice that you would like to give to your juniors sitting for placements next year?

-> I don't have much to say in that regard, but a thing which I'd defintely tell them is- Never give up and have patience! The anxiety during the final year and the placement season is normal and is faced by one and all.
Believe me, it all works out in the end!
